HIV CLINICAL TRIAL
Volunteers living with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) are needed to help evaluate the effect of TMP-SMX (trimethoprimsulfamethoxazole also known as Bactrim®) when taken in combination with AZT and HBY 097 (non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor), a new investigational treatment for HIV.
Novum, Inc. is a leading pharmaceutical research services company that has extensive experience conducting HIV research studies for major pharmaceutical companies.
Those diagnosed with AIDS (by a history of pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) or a CD4 count greater than 50 and less than 200 cells/mm3) who are eligible for the study will take a combination of HBY 097 and AZT for two periods of ten days each. Some individuals will also receive BactrimR as part of the combination. The second 10-day period will immediately follow the first. Participants will remain at Novum's testing facility for 22 to 25 consecutive days, including overnights. (Note: All participants will receive aerosolized pentamidine prior to the start of the study as prevention against PCP.)
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing to determine HIV viral load levels will be done free of charge as part of the comprehensive medical screening to determine eligibility for this study.
Upon completion of the study, participants will be paid $2,600.00.
Men and women ages 18 to 50 who are diagnosed with AIDS may be eligible for this study if:
Your CD4 count is greater than 50
You currently are being treated with BactrimR as prevention against pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP)
You are currently under treatment with AZT
You are practicing effective contraception or are abstinent
You do not have an active opportunistic infection requiring treatment
